Judge Acquits Highest-Ranking Officer in Freddie Gray Case

A Baltimore judge ruled another officer not guilty of charges in the case of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old man whose death in police custody stirred unrest across the country. Lt. Brian Rice was the highest ranking officer charged in Gray’s death. He faced charges of manslaughter, reckless endangerment, and misconduct in office.

Four of the six officers involved in the case have already been tried. As of Monday, three have been acquitted and one is facing a retrial.

Gray died in the custody of the Baltimore police after he ran from officers on bike patrol. After being placed in the back of a van, Gray was shackled but was not strapped down. According to officials, Gray hit his head while in the back of the vehicle. He died a week later.
