Indian Police Have Arrested Three Men Accused of Raping a Woman for the Second Time

Police in India have arrested three men accused of gang raping a 20-year-old college student in the city of Rohtak, in an alleged attack the victim’s family believes was intended to punish her for reporting a rape by the same perpetrators three years ago.

The director general of police in the northern Indian state of Haryana has confirmed that two of the arrested men were out on bail charged with the 2013 crime, when a group of five men allegedly assaulted the same woman, the New York Times reports.

Family members of the victim have described how she went missing on the way to college on July 13. The woman was found with torn clothing and bruises on her neck after apparently being abducted, and allegedly drugged and raped by the men. After being admitted to the hospital, she told relatives the attackers were the same five men that attacked her before.

“We were getting constant threats from the accused to reach a compromise outside the court, but we remained firm. That’s why they have attacked her again,” the victim’s brother told the Hindustan Times.

According to the New York Times, authorities said they were waiting on forensic evidence to verify the woman’s claims.
