A Chicago gang member was sentenced to 90 years in prison after he shot and killed a pregnant teenage girl who plead with him for her life, according to PEOPLE.
Timothy Jones, 23, was sentenced on Monday in Cook County after being convicted of first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm in the August 2011 killing of Charinez Jefferson, then just 17, prosecutors said in a release.
Jones saw Jefferson with a rival gang member and fired at him but missed, say prosecutors. Jefferson, who was then 7 months pregnant, was then shot multiple times by Jones before she was killed.
Jefferson was begging for her life with Jones before he killed her, according to witness Romell VanTrease, who was quoted in Chicago Tribune. Jones was swearing at her while he fired at her and she fell to the ground according to the Tribune, that cited prosecutors.
“She begged for her life … said, ‘I’m pregnant’,” VanTrease said.
Jefferson’s son Kahmani, now 5, did survive the shooting, though he remains “fully incapacitate” with little chance of recovery, according to prosecutors.
